1. City Council Upholds Traditional Meeting Schedule
The Spokane City Council decided last week to maintain its longstanding practice of holding meetings on Mondays, a tradition spanning over 112 years. Other changes adjusting procedural rules were also rejected after being met with concerns about likely impacts on council dynamics and public participation. The unanimous decision to reject the changes reflects a positive and collaborative commitment by the Council to stability and transparency in local governance.
2. Council President Wilkerson Concludes Homelessness Policy Roundtables
On Dec 10th, a wrap-up ‘town-hall’ was held on Council President Betsy Wilkerson’s series of community roundtable discussions on issues relating to homelessness, health, and safety in Spokane. SBA, along with many other organizations and citizens participated in the roundtables and a follow-up survey. Many pressing issues were identified, with strong support voiced for enforcing existing laws against pedestrian interference, obstruction, unlawful camping, and sit and lie, and also the proper administration of good neighbor agreement and homeless shelter siting.
The Spokane Business Association is tracking these issues and recommendations and will directly support initiatives that make our community a safe and prosperous place for our businesses, citizens, and our most vulnerable populations.
3. City Council Approves Mayor’s Biennial Budget
In a 5-2 vote, the Spokane City Council has approved Mayor Lisa Brown’s 2025-2026 biennial budget proposal. The Spokane Business Association is conducting a thorough review and assessing the budget’s implications on public safety andother key business and community concerns.
